Professor Jens Marklof

~ The Three Gap Theorem in Higher Dimensions ~

Jens Marklof (University of Bristol) presented a particularly accessible talk on a surprising and easily understood theorem from the 1950s; Take a point on the unit circle and rotate it n times by a fixed angle. For any choice of n, the resulting intervals can have at most three distinct lengths. Proven by several mathematicians in the 1950s, Jens presented an elegant proof he and Andreas Strömbergsson found in 2016, published in American Mathematics Monthly. The talk then showed how to generalised the theorem and proof further, this more advanced work seeing the pair team up with Alan Haynes.
