~ Reflecting on the Learning Context ~

Our second talk was from Joel Haddley, a Senior Lecturer in the Department of Mathematical Sciences at the University of Liverpool. Via a padlet, a piece of software into which the audience could all enter answers to the questions asked, we established that within the room their was a truly vast array of previous experiences with learning systems, institutions, and curricula that we had passed through (successfully) to get to where we are now, a place from where we are about to teach students. Joel is one of those unsettling lecturers who makes you aware of a problem (how to teach in a way that takes into account the enormous variation in where a student is starting from) but does not offer any easy answers. We were left to mull over how significant the problem was, and what we should individually do, as teachers, to best mitigate it. A perfect point at which to break for lunch and further discussions amongst ourselves.
