Lunchtime Doodles

~ Proofs With Minimal Words ~

Lunch came in a brown paper bag. All seventy or so of us made our way to the City's beautiful Weston Park for a warm weather picnic. Sheffield is home to a lively and flourishing group of Topologists. Sitting on the grass in a large circle, I had a number of wide ranging conversations with several of the PhD students in that group. I also had exchanges with students from the Universities of Manchester, Leicester and Liverpool. The doodles in the photograph were drawn by Fionntan Roukema. He's busy writing a book on visual proof, a topic I love teaching as a part of the Further A-Level mathematics course. Keen to try out some of the proofs he has created, I was a willing audience for him to experiment upon. In all, our lunch break under Sheffields cloud free sky lasted two hours.
