Goodbye Sheffield

~ Via The Biggest Paternoster in Europe ~

No visit to the University of Sheffield would be complete without taking a ride on the biggest paternoster lift in Europe. After thanking all of the organisers for a most worthwhile day, a group of eight of us headed for the 19 floor Arts Tower where this engineering masterpiece was installed in 1966. It's a lift of two-person boxes, without doors, that does not stop. Moving at a rate of 13 seconds per floor you simply step on and step off as required. In total 78 people can be on it at once. Some of us were (hilariously) a lot more nervous about using it than others. I stepped on, did a loop that took around 10 minutes, and stepped off without incident. A fun way to end my Sheffield day !
