~ The Hat Tiling is Topologically Conjugate to a Model Set ~
In March 2023, David Smith, Joseph Myers, Craig Kaplan and Chaim Goodman-Strauss stunned the mathematical community by announcing the construction of an aperiodic monotile. They named their discovery, previously speculated not to exist, the “Hat”. Incredibly, less than four months later, I am sitting listening to Franz Gähler talking us through a paper presenting significant mathematics that analyses the structure and topology of the “Hat”. He, along with co-authors Michael Baake and Lorenzo Sadun, are indeed like “greyhounds off the leash” ! Their paper is, Dynamics and Topology of The Hat Family of Tilings.
