~ Hexagonal Quasiperiodic Tilings: Decorations and Fractals ~
Sam Coates was the first speaker, treating his audience to a delightful visual feast of aperiodic tilings. Sam's research is taking forward work by the late Professor NG de Bruijn (1981-2012) who discovered two global construction methods for Penrose tilings. “cut-and-project” and “multigrid”. Both methods were utilised by Sam. More than the technicalities, Sam clearly had a terrific geometers eye. This gave him a strong sense of where his insights should take the mathematics.
