Professor Jamie Walton

~ Hexagonal aperiodic tiles ~

Jamie Walton launched into his talk with the observation that, although there is now a “zoo” of shapes that can tile the plane aperiodically (some with decorations of various kinds), there are but few approaches to proving aperiodicity. In an effort to compare like with like, he focused on tilings based upon hexagons, of which, as the photograph illustrates, the Hat is one. His other three examples were the Penrose 1+€+€² tiles, the Taylor-Socolar tile, and a tile based on orientational matching rules. The objective of his presentation was to show that the Hat had a completely new structure and method of proving it's aperiodic, thus emphasising what a remarkable find it is. A video of his talk is available.
