~ Record-setting assembly of Hat tiling ~
Over the two days of HatFest, during coffee breaks and over lunch, a community project began to (literally) take shape; an attempt at a record breaking assembly of Hat tiles. There is nothing quite like physically trying to fit the individual tiles together to appreciate what a tricky affair it is. Indeed, I was surprised at how easy it was to wrongly place a tile but not realise for quite some time. The realisation would dawn that a mistake lay further back when an inlet needed filling in but couldn't be. In the photograph the red tiles are the mirror image of the white. These provide an overall impression of regularity. It seems to me that the region top right has gone wrong. That correctly placing the tiles was not a simple matter makes me suspect that the final size achieved is less than the organisers expected. All the more credit to David Smith for initially realising, through dogged persistence, that multiple Hats could be placed in a manner that seemed to allow a tiling of the plane.
